The visitor numbers are the worst in a decade.

Spanish tourism officials have said the summer season has given an indication of how bad figures will be in the near future.

Between July and September tourist activity increased slightly due to a steep reduction in prices.

But the general falloff in sales from less affluent tourists caused many firms to go into debt.

Hotel occupancy was 61 percent during the summer season, 6 points below the numbers for 2007.
