Canada wants to keep the peace with US

Albuquerque News.Net
Sunday 9th August, 2009

Even though Canada has become annoyed by protectionist sentiments coming out of the US, the Canadian government has said it will not retaliate against the Buy-American provision in President Barrack Obama's $787-billion stimulus package.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper is due to meet President Obama this week at a North-American summit in Guadalajara, Mexico, where it is unlikely the situation will be discussed.

Mr Harper has already said he will not ask the US for any concessions that Canada cannot make itself.

Harper and Trade Minister Stockwell Day were able to convince provincial premiers last week not to retaliate against the US for fear of impeding free trade.
