Opposition supporters arrested in Cuba

Albuquerque News.Net
Thursday 3rd July, 2008

Eight people have been arrested in Cuba, in an action against opponents of the communist government.

Police have confirmed the arrest of the eight, but opposition leader Vladimiro Roca has said there is concern about many other opposition members targeted in the raids.

So far their whereabouts are unknown.

Roca called the action an act of repression and said it was intended to prevent a meeting banned by the government.

On 22 June, five other dissidents were also arrested, roughed up and then released.

Under Cuba's new president, Raul Castro, the country has gained new freedoms.

Cubans may now buy computers and mobile phones, hire cars and stay overnight in hotels previously reserved for tourists.
